The Big Three: Sun, Moon, Rising

Your 'Big Three' is the foundation of your natal chart. The SUN represents your core identity, life-force, and ego - the 'I am' of your being. The MOON governs your emotional inner world, instincts, and what makes you feel safe. The RISING (or Ascendant) is the mask you wear in public - how others first perceive you, and the gateway through which you meet the world. Together, they form a triangle of self.
